Malaga, 25 of April 2023.- 2023 is the year to discover Malaga through the eyes of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. The brilliant painter and author of emblematic works such as Life (1903), Guernica, and Portrait of Dora Maar (1937) opened his eyes for the first time in the capital of the Costa del Sol and his hometown has devoted itself to commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death. So now is the time to experience Picasso's Malaga and discover Picasso through Malaga.
Picasso's Route
In 1881 Picasso was born in Malaga, and so his route begins precisely at his birthplace, now converted into a museum. From there, it goes through other significant places in the early years of the painter's life. The second house where he lived and began to draft his first drawings, the church where he was christened, the studio where his first photograph was taken, and his old school.
The itinerary, which can be followed with an audio guide, also takes in some of the main places that inspired Picasso, such as the Malagueta Bullring, the Old School of Fine Arts, the Malaga Lyceum, and the Old Municipal Museum, frequently visited by the young Pablo as his father worked there.
There are 18 points of reference to Picasso's past on this route, which ends, as it could not be in any other way, at the Museo Picasso Málaga, whose collection, housed in the Palacio Buenavista, includes everything from his earliest works to his interpretation of the classics in his later years.
Exhibitions
Malaga is a city of museums and in 2023 the number of exhibitions and displays around the figure of the famous local artist will multiply, with the Picasso Museum Malaga and the Casa Natal Museum as the nerve centers.
Sometimes simultaneously, such as the exhibition which, until 28 May, can be seen at the Museo Casa Natal Picasso, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, and the Collection of the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg/Malaga. In addition, this year, the collection of the Museo Picasso Málaga will be increased with an exhibition that covers the entire artistic career of Pablo Picasso. Other exhibitions reflect the artist's influence on fashion, such as the Haute Couture collection of the Automobile and Fashion Museum (MAM), which will include a series of bags signed by the Malaga-born genius's sister, Paloma Picasso. Or photography, as in the exhibition that will take place at La Malagueta Cultural Centre with portraits of the painter's private and family life.
A taste of Picasso
In addition to the exhibitions and displays in the different museums, throughout this year, Malaga will be able to experience in depth the atmosphere of the year of Picasso. For example, through its gastronomy, in the city's restaurants, you can taste menus with Picasso's influence, reaffirming on the plate how, in 2023, in Malaga you can taste art.
